About

Federal Environmental Tracker follows environmental rules, proposed rules and notices published in the Federal Register, the U.S. government’s daily journal. Each business morning it adds that day’s documents, each with a plain-language summary, a locator map and a link to the original, and posts them to Bluesky at @envtracker.bsky.social.

It is a Geographic Exploration project, independent of the Federal Register and of every federal agency. Coverage begins October 26, 2026. Summaries can contain errors; the Federal Register document is the official text.

Methodology

What’s included. Documents from 14 agencies whose work most often touches the environment: Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Department of Energy, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and Nuclear Regulatory Commission. An AI model sorts each document into a fixed set of categories, such as environmental reviews, permits, state air plans, species protections, fishery rules, land plans and offshore leasing. Documents outside those categories, routine paperwork notices and meeting announcements are left out.

Summaries. An AI model writes each title and summary from the document’s text, and assigns topics from a fixed list of 13. A second AI model checks the summary against the document. If any claim is unsupported, or the summary leaves out who, what, where, when or why, it is rewritten, up to three attempts in all. A document whose summary still fails is listed without one. Summaries are written and checked by Anthropic’s Claude models.

Maps. Each map shows where an action applies, not its exact boundaries. Coordinates come from the document when it states them; otherwise from a state’s derived centroid or a place search. Each page lists the coordinates and how they were found. Base map from Natural Earth; place search data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Related documents. Documents that share a regulation ID or docket number are linked in a timeline on each page.

Corrections. When a summary is wrong, its page is corrected with a dated note and a correction is posted in reply to the original Bluesky post. Nothing is deleted.
